Read the Internet of Things: From the origin of concepts to product innovation

The "Internet of Things Trends Summit Forum" organized by e-fans ended on January 16th. The giants at the conference gathered, and the number of engineers was full and lively. Mr. Chen Xiongji, Senior Market Development Manager from Asia Pacific, from Silicon Labs, gave a wonderful speech on “From concept to product, from idea to Internet of Things”.

The journey of the Internet of Everything has been opened

Since the first networked "equipment" was born in 1990, Kevin Ashton created the term "Internet of Things" in 1999, and IPV6 was put into operation in 2011. The Internet of Things was first incorporated into the Gartner technology maturity curve and climbed to 2014. The peak of the curve is too high... Today, the Internet of Things industry has reached an alarming scale. ABI Research pointed out that the current Internet of Things has nearly 10 billion wireless interconnect devices, and by 2020 the number of connected devices will exceed 300. Billion is more than three times the current number of devices.

The first networkable "device". Yes! that's it!

In fact, the official birth of the Internet of Things originated in September 2008, and has since experienced four major periods:

● The promotion period of the birth of technology. The success stories of early proof-of-concept and the interest of the media sparked public concern, at which no practical products were produced and the commercial viability was not proven.

● Too high a desired peak. Early propaganda produced a lot of success stories, along with a large number of failure cases. Some companies are starting to act, but most companies are not moving.

● The low valley of foaming. As trials and practices fail, interest in new technologies begins to diminish. Market consolidation began to accelerate.

● Recovery period and stable development period. More experimental projects, as well as second and third generation products, are beginning to emerge. New technologies have been widely adopted as mainstream technologies, making it easier to judge supplier viability.

The tide of mergers and acquisitions is raging.

Grasping the future with innovative concepts

According to Gartner Research, in 2017, 50% of IoT solutions will come from start-ups that have been in existence for less than three years. Chen Xiongji said that at this stage, small companies already have good sources of funding (such as crowdfunding platforms), which also shows that consumers are very willing to pay for creative solutions. But again, these companies are also facing unusually brutal competition.

From Google's 3.2 billion luxury Nest, you can see that for many large companies, innovation is equal to mergers and acquisitions; for small companies, mergers and acquisitions mean increased strength and portfolio growth. Silicon Labs acquired Ember in 2012 and acquired Energy Micro in 2013 to fully deploy the IoT market.

In addition to mergers and acquisitions, innovation can also come from these two major ways: First, Hack Days, second, open up the eyes to relax thinking, one-third of the ideas will come from outside the organization.

Hack Days, inspire your creativity!

On the road to the Internet of Things, Silicon Labs will provide MCU (8-bit and 32-bit), wireless and sensor products for terminal contacts, and provide clock, power and other technologies for the Internet infrastructure (data center), aiming at smart metering. IoT applications such as wearables, smart homes, and smart buildings are actively deployed.
